Fun concept. Possibly someone who's of a race that the only ones on-planet are slaves? Never imagined it could be otherwise, so he's happy.

Actually in Rome and Greece, slaves were treated pretty well. Even had rights. House slaves in particular were well taken care of, sometimes even as well as the master's own son. Slaves would eventually earn enough cash/coin to purchase their own freedom, and some slaves, even so, decided to remain with their master, piercing their ear and wearing an earring that marked them as a "bondservant".

DISCLAIMER: It must be said that I believe slavery to be immoral under all circumstances and under no justification is slavery a good or even tolerable thing.
I only mean to present an intriguing opposite side to an argument commonly onesided. After all, how can we combat slavery should it occur in societies once more without understanding the mentality it takes to justify slavery? Maybe? Idk. Food for thought anyway.

I understand that. Unfortunately, modern slavery (and especially the slavery defined that the Batarian scum are described as having) is notably worse than that noted in the times of the Greeks and the Romans. We can presume that if the colony has been working for some time that such an old system may have come into place, but given that most of the pirates near the Traverse are Batarian, it's likely that we're getting only slightly better than regular beatings.

Oh sure, don't ask the person who made the Colony

Well I'll have you know!

The Colony isn't mostly Batarians, which are only a small Percent, most Pirates crews are multi-raced, and 40% of the colony's citizens are human, 15% are Turians, 10% Asari, 10% Batarian, 10% drell, 5% Quarians, 5% Volus, 5% Hanar

And while Slave trade happens on the planet, very few slaves are actually used by the Citizens

Stay away from Rev's crew.   She castrates her men.

Lightweight, Sam offers castrations as a basic service. Tearing off ears however, is a bit more expensive. Unless he's angry, then it's free.

I have Sam sitting in a tavern waiting for someone to request his services, be my guest if you think he'll accept your invitation. (get creative, money isn't a major reward for him.)

If he wants to join the freedom fighters, all he has to do is prove himself by stabbing a **** tonne of slave owners in front of a certain Ninja.
