The sounds of exploding metal echoed throughout the corridors of the Cassandra as the 5 Blue Suns vessels pursued.  The Cassandra was fast, but the Blue Suns had surprise, and weapons range.

"Where the hell is that FTL drive!?"  Tobias shouted as he clutched on to a side panel on the bridge.  The volleys of fire rocked the ship every which way.

"One minute, Captain!"  A terrified crewmen shouted from his station.

"We aren't going to last that long!"

"If we all die because of you, I'm going to kill you!"  Max shouted in a rage.

"Captain, the Salarian cargo ship is sending a transmission!"  A crewman shouted.

"Put him through."

At that moment a rather smug looking Salarian appeared on Tobias' console.

"Ah the notorious Captain Westen.  Before you are reduced to dust I would like to thank you for warning me about your intentions here today.  As you see I had more than enough time and credits to hire extra security.  But I have a deadline to meet, so your continued existence is quite the inconvenience.  So I will bid you farewell."

Tobias barely had time to tell the Salarian to **** off before the transmission cut.  Tobias was the captain, and his crew and he were about to meet a horrific and, as he could imagine, quite an unpleasant death.  He had to think of something.

The rest of the ride was spent in silence, and Isani was grateful when the shuttle finally slowed and descended. A glance out the window revealed the closing doors of a secure hangar.

The shuttle doors opened soon after.

Isani got to her feet after unbuckling, reaching into the compartment above her to take hold of her small, compressed bag of clothes.

She took a quick glance behind her before leaving, unsure of what to say to them. It already looked like none of the three of them were ever going to get along.

Katrin was glad when the Kodiak left the Citadel. She didn't know if they were the first to be picked up, or the last. Either way, once everyone was aboard, it wouldn't take long to reach the Traverse, and from there, she had no idea how long it would take to reach whatever planet they'd found. She shouldered her bags and made her way to the temporary quarters marked out on her Omni-tool. It was spartan, but it would do. Other than the tightass Salarian, today had been rather uneventful, and actually peaceful, until the voice in her head decided to start up again.

So, Katrin, you're finally on your way. Two years, 60 million, and whatever you can wring out of papers afterwards.

Shut up Kat.

Come on, I left you alone for the majority of that shuttle ride. Can't we at least talk?

Shut up Kat.

You think that Asari's single? I know you like dudes, but you have to agree. She's hot.

Kat, I swear...

What? That you'll kill us both? You know that won't happen. Would you rather stop getting high, and fall into a coma like Loy? You won't do that Katrin, I know you too well.

Katrin groaned aloud. "This is going to be a long two years."

South sat alone in the ship's cramped galley with a mug of coffee in one hand as he browsed Some of his favourite forums and scientific journals, pausing every now and then to get more coffee or stretch his legs. He had been awake for almost 48 hours according to one of his colleagues, and he had no intentions of sleeping as he planned on absorbing as much information as possible before being cut off from the extranet for 2 years with nothing but his fellow scientists, some samples, and 4300 hours of pornography to keep him company. He finished off his last coffee but couldn't muster the energy to get up and refill his mug.

"**** it. Nap time." He thought aloud. He put his face down on the table in front of him and passed out, letting his arms dangle by his sides.

"Are you sure you want to leave the Academy Sal? I know it's mostly teaching, but I'm certain that there's going to be more research opportunities here. Is it about the money? Because we can give you a raise if you want..."

"You know it's not about the money Cat. Even if it were, I doubt that the raise you'd give me would be worth Sixty Million. I could care less about the money, I've already set up my accounts to funnel everything towards the brood back home. No, this one is about the job itself. Not that often you get to see a Prothean Ruin before they've found everything."

Three days later...

Sitting in the cafeteria and slowly stirring in sugar to his mug, Ilste paused at the sound of the bay doors opening. "Second group? Just how big is this thing that they're willing to spend this much money?"

After her bags were stowed, Katrin retrieved one of the bottle's from Ri'a's bag. It was an incredibly powerful Asari painkiller, with a name that she couldn't translate into english or drell. As such, Katrin simply called it Kali. While these pills halted flashbacks the best, there was one problem with them; when she was buzzing on them, Kat became a lot more dominant.

Come now Katrin, don't fear me. I'm still you, remember.

"I hate you so much, Kat." Katrin whispered, her eyes growing moist.

No, you don't, Katrin. Let me in, you'll have to sooner or later. Almost as if on cue, Katrin felt her eyes dilate and the fog on her mind dissipate. In a panic, she swallowed a pill and felt it return, thicker than ever.

Kat opened her eyes and smiled. "Thank you, Katrin. Now let's go and meet the people."

She walked until she came across the cafeteria, and sadly, saw only two people within. A Salarian and a human sleeping at a table. She took the seat opposite the Salarian. "Hello." she said with a small smile. "How're you?"

Looking up from his mug, Ilste smiled and reached out a hand in greeting.

"Very well, thanks for asking. I'm Ilste, you can call me Sal. And you?"

Drell, slight musculature. Dressed well enough, not likely one of the guards. Scientist? Doctor?

Tobias' ship was falling apart around him.  His crew and he were mere moments away from being blown into the vacuum of space.  And that was when something brilliant struck him.

"Do we still have that shuttle loaded with mining charges we stole from that Volus ship last week?"

"Yes, what exactly are you...."  Max began to respond a moment before his brain figured out what Tobias was thinking.

"Shove it out of the cargo hold and get the aft gunners on standby!"

Max was almost half surprised that his idiot captain could even think of such an idea.  Tobias may have been an egocentric manwhore, alcoholic, prone to random bouts of unparalleled impulsiveness and stupidity.  But his ability to yank his own ass out of the fire never ceased to amaze.  If they managed to pull this off, Max decided he just might not shoot Tobias in the back of the head when it was all over.

A moment later the cargo hold opened, and the security shield dropped, sucking the shuttle out into space.  It tumbled back towards the direction of the 5 pursuing vessels.

"Hold..."

The ships continued to open fire, the Cassandra's kinetic barriers long since broken.

"Hold..."

More blasts rumbled the ship as twisted masses of wire and metal tore off into space.

"Hold."

They grew closer.  "Enemy ship is arming thanix cannons!"  A crew member sounded.

"Fire!"

And with that the aft guns of the Cassandra let loose at the whimsically tumbling shuttle.  It absorbed a few rounds before the port side engine erupted.  What came next was more impressive than any fireworks display ever seen.  The explosion tore through the hull of the shuttle, igniting a few mining charges that tore the ship asunder and sent massive shock waves out through the void.  Those same explosions would ignite more charges, and so on, until the 5 pursuing Blue Suns ships found themselves flying through a chain reaction of death and destruction.  Two of the ships were immediately torn in half.  The scattered debris and chunks of hull slammed into a third ship that went down in flames almost immediately.  The remaining two managed to pull upwards, evading certain death, but not before suffering severe damage to their engines.  They may have been immobile, but they could still bite back.

"FTL ready Captain."

"Jump us out of here immediately!"

The Cassandra tore off into deep space, disappearing in an instant.  Tobias' insane stunt managed to prevent their untimely demise.  But then again, it was his fault they were ever in that situation to begin with.  And Max did not forget this.  Tobias turned towards his crew with a rather large grin expressive of his own satisfaction in himself.

"Looks like we....."

And no more than a moment later was he struck on the back of the head.  His world went black.

"It seems we've all been left in the dark. Everyone I've met so far appears to be support personnel, and since I was with the first group it means I've probably been relegated to the job of Lab Assistant." Waving off the implications involved, he pointed to the nearby sleeping man. "He's been here as long as I have. Haven't had the opportunity to meet him yet though, he didn't respond to anyone asking him any questions. Just kept reading things on his datapad the whole time."

"Seems about right. Seems like it'll take the apocalypse to make everyone get along." Kat sighed. "Oh well, sooner we get there, sooner we get to leave."

She stretched her neck. "So, what do you do? I'm a Xenobiologist, psychiatrist, and whatever else they want me to do with medical tools." She chuckled a little. "I wonder why they wanted biologists."

Her bags accounted for, and taken down to the cargo bay by a helpful shipmate.
She was making her way to the lower deck when her stomach let out a noise, and the asari recalled what she had eaten the day before, or rather, that she had not eaten.

Directions for the mess hall were easy to receive, and she quickly made her way there, hoping the ship had yet to take off.

She saw the drell she had taken the shuttle with and a horribly scarred salarian, of whom she was morbidly curious. But, recalling the drell's outburst, she assumed it best to make herself scarce, and obtained for her self some complimentary levo paste from the cafeteria's rotton mouthed chef.

"I'm trained in Xenoanthropology and Xenobiochemistry, but most of it was practical work not theory. My previous employment was work on digging up the more recently dead than the Protheans. If I'm here? It's most likely mummified corpses. Heh. I'm reminded of what my teacher once said when they first got on the subject, 'If you find a saponified or a mummified corpse, that's the day you do the Forensics happy dance, but don't tell anyone I told you.

Spoiler alert: I did."

Kat laughed. "Well that's probably why I'm here. I've been a surgeon since I was 18, mummies would be a welcome distraction. I even got to dissect a few Husks and such during the war."

From the corner of her eye, Kat saw the Asari from before moving across the room with a tray. She flagged her down; "Hey Sexy! Mind bringing that ass over here?"

Gods damn you Kat.

Isani froze when the drell made eye contact with those words. Her posture was loose, a sleazy smile crossing her face. The drell before had been stiff and unfriendly.

Then Isani wondered mildly if this was a joke. She had yet to study drell culture, it was very possible that she was misinterpreting the female's behavior.

Isani almost walked over to sit with her, but the look in the drell's eye disturbed her greatly.

So she smiled weakly, and hurried over to the table farthest from her, sitting down quickly.

She looked up from her food and saw the same red-flecked salarian from before,  and waved, trying to smile.
