Brandon couldn't help but join in with the laughter.  He wasn't sure how Sal managed it, but it was a pretty good prank.

Brandon took a moment to think on her question.  He'd been expecting some casual conversation, maybe something about his line of work, plans when they landed.  This was a different turn.

"...That's pretty deep, Katrin.  I know a lot of people were affected by the war... I mean, it was pretty much the end of the universe.  Nobody really came out the same afterwards."

He took a breath before he continued.  "I never knew too many soldiers in the war, but... I lost my father after the Reapers attacked Elysium.  We got separated, and the Reapers targeted the evacuation ships as we tried to leave the Relay... his ship didn't make it."

Brandon felt a lump in his throat, and needed a moment before he started again.  "It was... horrible, knowing that there was nothing you could do, and you were helpless to stop what was coming.  The worst part was that the war ended only weeks later.  My Mom was beside herself with grief, and almost refused to talk with us.  She put the blame on anyone she could, wishing that he'd been with us in place of another, or even that she'd been on the ship with him.  My sister ended up having to care for her back on the Citadel... had we not been targeted for just a while longer, my Dad would still be alive, and I'd probably still be back on the colony.  I guess it's just another one of those things that..."

He shook his head, rubbing at his eye to hide a tear.  "Sorry.  You didn't need to hear all that.  I guess... just keep trying to reach her.  Don't push her too much, but if she's walling herself off, you need to find a way in.  It may take more than once, but it's better than letting her deal with it herself."

"Sure," Brandon said with a small smile... or at least he tried, given how the food tasted.

He swallowed the mouthful down.  "What would you like to know?"

"Huerta Memorial?  No kidding!  I used to do some research with them back on the Citadel!  Also had a bit of a misstep there, needed to search for other opportunities."

He sat down, Katrin seated across from him.  "So, what did you mean about Sal having a field day?  Something going on?"

"Ha, true enough." Brandon laughed as they walked.

The two reached the mess hall, several crew members walking about and eating what was being served.  From the looks of it, the Levo-menu today was a reconstituted Salisbury steak with potatoes and gravy.  Brandon grimaced, but figured it was better than nothing... at least, he hoped it was.

Grabbing a tray from a nearby stack, he moved down the aisle getting a various assortment of 'ship food.'  "So, Katrin, what are you doing aboard the Arethusa?"

"Oh, hey Katrin!" Brandon replied, happy to see a friendly face.  "Not much, I guess.  Was getting a bit of cabin fever, so I decided to stretch my legs."

He started to walk alongside the drell, matching her strides.  "So, now that we have a moment, want to head to the mess?"

Brandon laid on his cot in his cabin, simply staring up into the ceiling as he reflected.  He wasn't bored, but he wasn't content.

He'd spent a good amount of time holed up in his room, looking over past extranet files, reading over the newest edition of Chemistry and Engineering, browsing for a new omnitool and shuddering at the prices.

I guess this is what you get when you're forced to leave from research, he thought with a sigh.  The chemical burn scars across his arms agreed, a stark reminder of how unforgiving some mistakes could be.  While not horrendous, the scars might certainly prove unnerving to some, and had done so in the past.  Still, he was always told that scars added character; some even went so far to say that women liked scars... but he'd believe it when he saw it.

Brandon drew a deep breath, and sat up, getting his shoes on as he made himself ready to leave.  He felt he'd take another look around the ship at least.  They would be landing eventually, and he'd hardly spoken to anyone aboard.

Resolved, he stepped outside and headed down the hallway.

Brandon had been surprised at the sudden lurch of the craft, more still of Kat grabbing a hold of his arm for support, but he held himself well enough.

Now a salarian had stumbled upon them in what might quickly become an awkward conversation.

He returned the gesture to "Sal," as he introduced himself as.  "I'm Brandon.  It's nice to meet you."

He noticed Kat seemed somewhat embarrassed, or so he thought.  "Uh, anyway, if we get the chance, I'd like to take you up on that offer.  Might as well head back to the cabins, I guess.  Not sure what else to do now other than wait."

"Why not?  I could use some company," Brandon replied, giving her a smile.  "I just hope the food's actually worth eating, though at this point I don't think my stomach will care."

He motioned for her to follow with his new-found sense of direction.  "I'm Brandon, by the way," he continued as they walked, extending his right hand in greeting.  "Brandon Miles."

Brandon thought on her response for a moment.  The ship was going to FTL soon, but he did need a place to store his things...

His stomach growled a response.

"Uh, which way to the mess?"

Startled by the voice blaring over the intercom, Brandon Miles nearly dropped his gear as he attempted to get his bearings.  It seemed that he'd been walking for quite some time, and being lost in thought he'd now become lost himself.

As unease began to set in, Brandon began his search for something or someone to give him some sense of direction.  Pacing the hallway, he came upon a female drell with a mild green, almost viridian tone to her scales.

Maybe she could help, he thought, relieved at there being another passenger so close by.  Without hesitation, he cheerfully approached her.

"Hello miss!  I, um, seem to have gotten myself lost here.  Not really sure where I am at the moment, and the voice over the intercom's mentioned the hour until they're making the jump.  Could you point me in the right direction for... well, anywhere?" he asked hopefully.

With his mother's blessing, he followed in his father's footsteps, learning the ways of chemistry and assisting in the Citadel's Huerta Memorial to further his education upon graduation.  He quickly learned what medicines were needed for a variety of species' ailments, and observed and explored a variety of the organic compounds in the labs.  On one such occasion in the university's lab analyzing a sample, Brandon accidentally discovered a faster way to form a nitrite-explosive, rather his goal of a more effective anesthetic for hanar.  After having to pay roughly 5,000 credits in damages and formally leave the university department, Brandon is now in search of new prospects, intent in putting his knowledge to use.
